Red Berry Coffee Company Sleep Out to Support Simon Community

Tuesday 12 January 2010

On the 20th December six staff members from the Red Berry Café Coffee Company and Stephen Agnew of the Green Party experienced what it was like to be homeless for 24 hours in an organised sleep-out. The event raised over £1550 for the homeless charity Simon Community NI.

Simon Harper, Assistant Manager of Red Berry Café commented:

"It was one of the coldest weekends to have the event, with snowfall and temperatures dropping to -4.  It was a difficult task with the weather and lack of sleep, but it made us feel so lucky to have a home and personal luxuries.  The generosity of the public with donations, words of encouragement, food, hot drinks and some extra clothing was staggering.  I can only hope that people would be as generous to a real homeless person.  The credit crunch has been hard on us all and especially those in charities, I chose the Simon Community to raise awareness of homelessness within North Down."

Celine Ferreria, Team Leader of Bangor project added:

"Last year 31% of individuals who approached Bangor project for accommodation had recent experience of rough sleeping.  The sleep out was a great opportunity to raise awareness of homelessness and to highlight the work of Simon Community.  We would like to thank all the staff from Red Berry Coffee Company who took part in the sleep out.  We are delighted with the kind donation which will help us to continue to address homelessness in the Bangor area."
