Bailey was only 16 years old when he first arrived at our youth hostel, Mount Street Mews, based in Coleraine. Diagnosed with mild Asperger’s and, at times, exhibiting behaviours related to poor mental health, the early days of his stay at the project were not plain sailing as he struggled to connect with other residents and required intervention from emergency services.

However, over the 1002 days that Bailey lived at our project, things began to change as trusting relationships developed between him and our staff. Over time, support plans could be put into place which encouraged the development of living skills such as laundry and cleaning. Promoting the importance of cookery skills, staff worked with Bailey to enrol in a catering course at Northern Regional College.

Supporting Bailey to find his first job, our staff introduced a plan which included mock interviews, the importance of ironed clothes and time keeping. Successfully getting a part time sales assistant job with a major retailer, the team in Coleraine watched him flourish, grow in confidence and learn to budget his finances.

This Christmas, for the first time in three years, Bailey won’t be helping cook the turkey at Mount Street Mews hostel. Having been accepted on to a two-year equestrian course at CAFRE Enniskillen, he now has the living skills, confidence and maturity to live happily independent within his local community.
