What is homelessness?

 

 

  • Having no permanent home
  • Staying with friends or relatives as emergency accommodation
  • Staying in temporary accommodation such as a bed and breakfast, a hostel or squat
  • Sleeping rough

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

How Many?

Reasons?


Factors that can cause homelessness are

  • Structural e.g. shortage of affordable housing, low income and poverty.
  • Institutional e.g. having been in care or in the armed forces.
  • Family background e.g. experience of family homelessness in childhood, family breakdown and disputes, sexual or physical abuse in childhood or adolescence, having parents with drug or alcohol problems.
  • Individual e.g. using drink or drugs at an early stage, getting involved with crime at an early stage, lack of qualifications, persistent truancy or exclusion from school, lack of social support networks.

Personal events that can happen in an indivduals life and cause homelessness can be:

  • Financial crisis/debt.
  • Eviction from owned or rented home.
  • Householders no longer willing / able to share their home.
  • Leaving the parental home in a crisis.
  • Deterioration in mental health or increase in alcohol or drug misuse.

Believe it or not all of these familiar faces have been homeless
